Vietnamese Women's Museum
Museums, among other things, have the power to surprise and inspire you. Vietnamese Women’s Museum definitely did. In the heart of Hanoi, near Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter, there’s an extraordinary museum which you should definitely visit if you’re ever in the capital of Vietnam.
History & Culture
Vietnamese Women’s Museum narrates fascinating stories about amazing women. From the Trung sisters, who led the battle for independence against the Chinese in 40AD, to La Thi Tam, who was in charge of locating bombs and saving thousands of lives during the Vietnam war, women of all ages and backgrounds have been fighting throughout history.
Passion & Inspiration
It’s truly inspiring to see how different a country can be when they encourage women to fight, live with passion, and not be silent in the shadows of history. Women here are not described, like they do time and again in my country’s history, just as “wives of great men”. No. Here they have the freedom to be great themselves. By fighting, working hard, striving for good, serving, helping others and saving lives.
Lives & Stories
At the museum, you encounter so many stories… Stories about women who were brave warriors, brilliant inventors, hardworking farmers, fierce mothers, talented artists, distinguished politicians, outstanding athletes, devoted scientists, successful business-women, courageous fighters, and the list could go on and on and on! Women who, at the end of the day, were nothing more, but also nothing less, than human.
The visit
Although the museum was established in 1987, in late 2010 it went under renovations. So, today you can enjoy a contemporary approach, with lots of pictures, videos and interactive exhibits, which give you an insight into the museum’s diverse collection. There are three main permanent exhibitions: Women in Family; Women in History; and Women’s Fashion, as well as temporary exhibitions. Allow at least 1-2 hours to fully enjoy the museum -and its shop!
